Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a buzzword within our industry for years. As defined by Wikipedia, AI is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to natural intelligence of animals. Most commercial AI solutions to date, truthfully, have been relatively rudimentary and limited to simple keyword matching and scoring.
For example, if a user searches for the text string ‘barks, wags tail, chases cats’, Google’s search-based AI will likely return results pointing to various ‘dog’ websites as it’s AI has decided the user is talking about a dog, even though they don’t explicitly type the word ‘dog’ in their search query. Makes sense, but pretty simple.
DALL·E 2 is a new AI system that can create realistic images and art from a description in natural language text. DALL·E 2 can make realistic edits to existing images from a natural language caption and can add and remove elements while taking shadows, reflections, and textures into account.
DALL-E 2 created the following image based the text input ‘Teddy bears mixing sparkling chemicals as mad scientists in a steampunk style’:
Another favorite we are playing with is MidJourney, a text-to-art AI generator that is revolutionizing the field of digital art and design.
MidJourney’s AI produced the following 4 image options based upon this natural language text input ‘handsome orange anime dragon in urban setting dnd character, background focus, fantasy, magic, realistic textured skin, clear clean, digital 2D, matte painting’:
As you can see, the graphical output is spectacular and the fact these images were created by AI based upon 22 words is absolutely incredible.
Although still early, the impact AI will have on the art world will be exponentially mind-blowing and limited only by the imagination (and vocabulary) of users.
